Recent rise in forged ADAS diver training certificates

IMCA currently recognises the certificates listed in IMCA D 01/18 Diver and Diving Supervisor Certification for offshore diving under the IMCA International Code of Practice for Offshore Diving (IMCA D 014).  The IMCA D 01/18 list includes certain certificates issued by the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS).

IMCA has been advised by ADAS of a recent rise in the number of forged ADAS diver training certificates being presented in the Asia-Pacific region.

ADAS has recently expanded its area of operation and now delivers diver training programmes in the region, which has probably contributed to this rise in falsified ADAS certificates.

Divers using a false qualification not only put themselves at risk but also other divers who may rely on them to perform effectively during routine operations or during an emergency.  There is also a considerable reputational risk for contractors who fail to undertake due diligence when presented with a new diver training certificate and as a result go on to employ inappropriately qualified divers – especially if such divers become involved in incidents and accidents at work.

Diving contractors are reminded that they must verify the validity of all diving certificates when they are initially presented for review – see information note IMCA D 02/18 Verification of Diver Qualifications for the contact details of relevant certification bodies.
