Bubbleheads sail into 6th place in 2021 Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge.

IMCA is delighted to see that the Bubbleheads, who set off from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands on 12 December 2021 successfully rowed the full 3000+ miles to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour in Antigua & Barbuda across the Atlantic Ocean! The annual race begins in early December, with up to 30 teams participating from around the world.

The four saturation divers, Chris Ayres, Andy Taw, Lewis Locke and James Piper, who are no strangers to dangerous and challenging environments, undertook what is said to be ‘The World’s Toughest Row’! The team were at sea for 37 days, 12 hours, and 45 minutes, consuming 900,000 calories, burning 1,500,000 calories and losing a combined 47 kg!

During a trip to Antigua in 2018, three of the Bubbleheads witnessed the arrival of the then winning boat and agreed it was challenge worth doing, despite some initial (and understandable) hesitance. The Bubbleheads stated that “The pivotal decision-making moment came when team member James told the crew how he wanted to find a way to raise money for Wessex Cancer Trust. The charity which provided him and his family endless support over the last six years as his late wife, Nikki, courageously battled a rare form of cancer. Nikki sadly passed away on 28 March 2020.”

The Bubbleheads also chose to support The Royal British Legion who provide lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families, having served 20+ years between them in HM Forces.
