CEO Update – May/June 2022

Welcome everyone to the latest edition of Making Waves. Many industry analysts are now commenting on the uptick in market demand in offshore oil & gas and even more so in wind energy projects, which is a welcome change in the business environment for marine contractors.

We now have the submissions from our contractor members on their 2021 safety statistics. The results reflect the turmoil in oil markets over the last two years and are mirrored in the results from both the drilling (IADC) and oil & gas production (IOGP) trade associations. The volatility of drastic cost cutting in 2020 followed by a gradual recovery in 2021 created multiple challenges for our Members in maintaining continuity of crews, operational focus, and the discipline in everyday work offshore. There were 16 fatalities reported in 2021, reflecting the truly horrendous events of the sinking of two vessels due to bad weather. One in a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico and another due to cyclone Tauktae offshore India; plus a ship’s fire offshore Mumbai. Total reported hours-worked of 550 million are down on 2020, although the offshore hours-worked of 285 million are broadly similar to 2020.  The offshore LTI Frequency Rate was identical to 2020 at 0.50, whereas total (offshore and onshore) LTI and Recordable Injury rates increased, somewhat reversing the long-term downward trend. Human factors may well be a highly significant factor in driving this increase, and our industry will no doubt respond positively. I would like to thank all our members who contributed to this, our 26^th annual survey.

In terms of member engagement, IMCA is now back on the road again. The year has started at a hectic pace with Subsea Expo, MCEDD, and just recently the IPF conference in Atlantic City, where we shared an exhibition stand with G+ the Offshore Wind Health & Safety Organisation. We recently held our DP Conference 31 May – 1 June and our Lifting and Rigging seminar is in October. Each of our regional committees are also planning activities. Please come and join us at any of our events this year.

Finally, our COVID disrupted committee election cycle is now almost complete. Many thanks for those who have taken part and for your hard work and contribution to our committees.
