Update from the MPRA Committee
Following COP 26, in December 2021 IMO agreed to initiate the revision of the Initial Green House Gas (GHG) Strategy and to strengthen the level of ambition previously agreed in 2018 when the Strategy was adopted. A revised Strategy is expected to be adopted by June/July 2023 with higher levels of ambition expected as IMO looks beyond 2030.
While no decisions have yet been made regarding the offshore sector, it is clear that the decision-making process will be driven by data and so it is imperative that the offshore sector continues to engage with IMCA’s data collection initiative, which has been ongoing for the past 3 years, to minimize the possibility of selection bias and inadequate quality control leading to a distorted impression when analysing the different proxies.
Recognising that the scope of the EU MRV Directive will be extended to the offshore sector from 2025 and to vessels > 400 GT, the MPRA Committee has developed an updated version of its’ Fuel Consumption data collection spreadsheet to include the possibility of collecting data from vessels of 400 GT and above and not just 5,000 GT and above as it has done in previous years.
During 2023 the Committee will be running a series of events aimed at promoting the use of the revised spreadsheet and advising members on further detailed analysis which can be carried out to review the performance of their fleet.
