ProjectGHG: Useful resources
Project GHG: Supporting the industry to meet ambitions on Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Shifting ambitions on Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) will impact how our Members work in several ways. Not just within the context of their day-to-day operations, but in how they are planning for the future with significant investments in people and vessels required if we are to meet new ambitions in this area.
IMCA has collated the resources below to support technical leads and business decision makers in an uncertain marketplace.

Regulatory
- IMO – Strategy on the reduction of GHGs from ships – A framework for IMO Member States, setting out the future vision for international shipping, levels of ambition to reduce GHG emissions and guiding principles. It includes mid-and long-term checkpoint targets for 20230 and 2040.
- MMMCZCS – Implications of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy for the Shipping Industry – Summary from the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping on the IMO’s GHG strategy and its implications for the shipping industry.
- IMO – Future Fuels website – A dedicated website aimed at the marine industry in the broadest sense, the online hub is a joint project of the Government of the Republic of Korea and the IMO aiming to support the regulatory decision-making at the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).
- Clyde & Co – Decarbonisation of the maritime industry – A dedicated Decarbonisation of the Maritime Industry hub which includes Clyde & Co’s latest articles, podcasts, and thought-leadership in the area.
Taxation
- Clyde & Co – EU emissions trading System for maritime transport – Part one of a six-part series of articles exploring new trading system in the EU from legal firm, Clyde & Co.
- Clyde & Co – Marine podcasts – A series of podcasts exploring the latest in marine news and taxation. Includes detailed episodes on how the ETS will impact operations in other jurisdictions.
- MMMCZCS – Assessing impacts of EU and US policies on accelerated deployment of alternative maritime fuels – Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping Report which examines the significant potential impact of the US and EU’s evolving climate policy landscape on maritime decarbonisation.
Technology
- IRO – Van Oord takes next steps in implementing more sustainable fuels – The Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Offshore Energy Industry, IRO has a real-life case study from IMCA Member Van Oord and how it is using methanol engines to reduce its vessel emissions.
- Fugro – Vessel conversion to green methanol fuel – The Fugro Pioneer is ready to be equipped with methanol engines after successfully converting the main components on board. Using green methanol reduces carbon emissions by more than 90% compared to conventional diesel.
- Rem – Rem Offshore orders next generation vessel – Rem Offshore and Myklebust Verft have signed a contract for an Energy Subsea Construction Vessel (ESCV) with a 250-tonne crane. It will be the first of its kind that can perform heavy construction work in both offshore wind and subsea with net zero emissions.
- Caterpillar Marine, Solstad Shipping & Pon Power Sign MoU – Collaboration will identify and evaluate solutions to increase the fuel efficiency of Solstad’s offshore vessels and reduce emissions.
- North Star – newbuild ship bound for EnBW’s He Dreiht wind farm – North Star has secured a contract with energy utility giant EnBW to deliver a new hybrid-electric service operations vessel (SOV) on a decade-long minimum charter to service the He Dreiht wind farm off the coast of Germany.
- RINA – CTV electrification project with Zevi Funding – UK-based crew transfer vessel (CTV) operator Tidal Transit has commenced the design and engineering phase of a project to deliver what is described as the world’s first retrofitted electric crew transfer vessel (E-CTV).
- Stillstrom – EnBw bp JV conducts offshore charging feasibility study – EnBW and bp joint venture and Stillstrom A/S conducts comprehensive offshore charging feasibility study for Mona and Morgan offshore wind farms in the UK.
Operations
- Maersk – 10 principles to decarbonise the OSV industry – A research paper by Maersk which offers operators and charterers practical ways to decarbonise. Although the paper takes as its point of departure offshore vessels, many of the principles outlined are applicable to the wider marine contracting industry.
- GCMD – Landmark study on offloading onboard captured carbon dioxide – Landmark study from the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation on offloading onboard captured carbon dioxide identifies low port readiness as key barrier to large-scale commercialisation with inadequate infrastructure and procedures identified.
- Allseas – Using alternative energy sources across our operations – Includes details of its Biofuels technology tests which reduced emissions by 25% on its construction vessel, Oceanic.
- ICS – Progressing port transparency on alternative fuels – Details on the International Chamber of Shipping’s Port Readiness Level for Alternative Fuels for Ships programme.
- World Ports Sustainability Program – Set up by the International Association of Ports and Harbors, the programme enhances and coordinates the sustainability efforts of ports worldwide and fosters international cooperation with partners across the supply chain.
- Business Norway – Maritime sector is steering green hydrogen revolution – Norwegian expertise is set to drive the green hydrogen transformation by making it a reality in the maritime sector.

Funding
- EU – €1 billion for alternative fuels infrastructure projects – The EU has pledged €1 billion for a range of transport infrastructure projects, including support to electricity supply and ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities in ports.
- GCMD – PAYS to increase adoption of Energy Efficiency Technologies – A White Paper from the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation on the potential of ‘Pay as You Save’ to spur required investment in vessels.
Data & monitoring
- MMMCZCS – LCA Methodology for Calculating the GHG Intensity of Maritime Fuels – To support effective decarbonisation, the maritime industry needs a standardised approach to assessing the climate impact of different fuels. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is introducing a new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.
- ABB – CO2e calculator – Find out how much CO2e emissions you could reduce on your vessel by applying different technological solutions. Fill in the main operational details of your vessel and the calculator will estimate how many emissions you can expect to reduce.
