IMCA and OCIMF staging cyber security seminar for London International Shipping Week

Published on 27 July 2017

The need for cyber security and understanding possible risks is a growing concern across all industries and sectors.  As part of London International Shipping Week the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) and the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) are holding a Cyber Security Seminar on 12 September.

With the overall theme ‘Ship control systems: ‘Designed in’ cyber security protection should be standard’ the afternoon seminar will focus on cyber security requirements for vessel operators dealing with third party access to vessel systems. Being held at the De Vere Conference Rooms in Canary Wharf, London it will examine the issues surrounding third party access to vessel systems and equipment, with a view to developing a protocol of understanding and expectation for vessel operators.

Topics to be covered include a threat update; the Internet of Things (IoT); machinery and equipment IP connectivity; education needs of employees; the need for access to systems; regulatory frameworks (including the NIS Directive, US Cyber Security Act); and the expectations of original equipment manufacturers, followed by a panel debate session comprising equipment manufacturers and vessel operators.

“Recent events, including the global ‘ransomware’ cyber-attack, have highlighted the need for cyber security,” explains Richard Benzie, IMCA’s Technical Director. “Warnings about other cyber threats are increasingly being issued by governments, security experts and professional bodies. The IMCA and OCIMF Cyber Security Seminar will help both organisations and individuals understand the threats to ship control systems, and help to ensure they develop the required mindset to avoid falling foul of threats aimed at our industry.”

The full programme will be available shortly on the IMCA website at https://legacy.imca-int.com/events/security-seminar-2017-london and from https://londoninternationalshippingweek.com/.
